Faster Recovery Time Using the Alexander Technique
Thoughts on Semi-Supine and its Value as Homework
My first student this morning, Dave, opened the door and said: “I am so proud of myself! I was extremely sore last night, having worked all day with the chain saw in less than ideal positions. But before I went to bed I did my lie-down, and this morning everything was fine, I feel terrific.”
Dave had already a full course of lessons and just started reducing his visits to every two weeks. But a few hours later I got an idea from Erik, coming today for his fourth lesson. He mentioned that he did his homework with his wife, who also gets on the floor with books under her head. They feel they can chat in semi-supine instead of sitting on the sofa. This is an excellent way to a better new habit.
As you can read in my blog Digging Out From Backpain in the Winter of 2011 I summarized my quick recovery from back pain as finding the middle ground between good use in continued movement and intelligent rest, when the body asks for it. I am certain and have experienced it many times in myself and in my students that the Alexander Technique helps us to recover more quickly from pain and injury.
